The Chicago Public Library protects the open and rampant use of Internet pornography by library patrons. This blog is an attempt to bring awareness to this issue and enact change.

Milabra - Detecting Images from Puppies to Porn

This is an interesting technology improvement and potentially has the capability in assisting with Adult Content Prevention. Maybe something we can use in the Chicago Public Library. IF the powers that be ever decide to stop protecting rampant Internet Porn use (and the subsequent broadcasting effect.)

Anyway - here's an article about this technolcogy, and here's the Milabra official website.

  1. It's hard to believe that our kids aren't even safe at the public library anymore. Why are so many efforts being made to ensure the safety and freedom of those wishing to view pornography, and so few steps being taken to keep it away from children and teens? Maybe the answer- or part of the answer- is to try to get our kids to do most of their web surfing at home, where parents can monitor what's going on. For a very reasonable fee, websites like My Internet Doorman can help create a safe internet environment for your kids. But it's sad to think that in order to keep your child safe, you have to keep them away from the library. What's next? Cocaine dispensers at the movie theater? After all... what about the rights of the drug dealers and junkies?

  2. It's an interesting situation and one that common sense should allow reasonable people to resolve. No one should be talking about censorship or denying access to material that has been deemed legal by our democratically elected officials. However, we also have laws prohibiting access to said material by minors. Until such time as we decide to keep minors our of the Library(obviously I'm joking) we need to find a way for the two groups to coexist. It can be something as simple as a seperate room for those under 18 to access the internet.

    Just a thought,

Thanks for the thoughts. I agree. The library bathroom is a particularly unsafe place for children. There have been too many stories of sexual assaults on children in library bathrooms. In regards to keeping children from being exposed to porn, I also agree. Even IF children are closely monitored by an adult, they can still be exposed to second-hand porn that's being broadcast through the computer work area.

Having a separate room is a good suggestion. There are a great many ways to successfully handle this issue. The important thing to note is that the Chicago Public Library has actively chosen to do NOTHING about protecting those that don't want to be exposed to second-hand porn at their local public library.
